Some of you have been wondering about “The Blob” that has appeared in the cove, ranging in size from golf balls to heads of lettuce. It has been seen around the lake, usually attached to a mooring line, dock or branch, sometimes several in succession. The creature has been identified by a biologist at Aquatic Control Technologies as a Bryozoan, a simple, colonial, freshwater species similar to a sponge, which filter-feeds food and water. Harmless, if not “interesting “ to the touch, this mass of jelly is actually an indicator of a healthy lake, as it requires clean water and ample sunlight.
DEP has recently asked us to be on the lookout for invasive water chestnut. There is an infestation on Ream's Pond in Thompson. This stuff can choke a waterway in no time, so we definitely don't want to see it started. Here is a USDA article about it with further references.
